Nestled in the heart of Milton Keynes, the Church of Christ the Cornerstone is a symbol of unity and collaboration, being the home of five Christian denominations. The purpose-built church, which reaches over 101 feet high, opened in 1992 and is a place of worship and prayer every day of the week and for a whole range of activities, including study and church friend groups, creche, and the local Foodbank collection centre.
After 31 years, the ageing and outdated lighting system was beginning to fail and flicker and was in desperate need of an upgrade – the church was ready to embrace the power of LED and the JHP Electrical team installed new energy efficient lights and intelligent switching with ambience controls.
Scope of Work:
The initial lighting landscape consisted of dated 4-pin 18W fluorescent lamps, offering limited control via rudimentary on/off switches. The upgrade, however, encompassed lighting up the entire church with LED lighting solutions, automatic switching, and smart controls via Bluetooth drivers.
The upgrade resulted in a more energy-efficient and customisable lighting system that greatly enhanced the overall ambiance of the church.
Installation and Challenges:
The grandeur of the church’s architecture presented a unique challenge. To address this, we used mobile scaffolding, which enabled our electrical engineers to navigate the heights and intricate layout. This approach ensured a flawless installation, maintaining the church’s architectural integrity. Ultimately, the project was a success and received high praise from both the church officials and their community.
Energy Savings and Efficiency:
The LED upgrade resulted in a remarkable reduction in energy consumption, nearly halving the church’s previous energy usage. Furthermore, the implementation of automatic switches and reduced output levels during summer months added an extra layer of efficiency, showcasing our commitment to sustainability.
Maintenance and long-term benefits:
The remarkable life expectancy of the new LED lighting, estimated at 50,000 hours, translates into significant savings on maintenance costs. The church can now redirect these funds towards its mission, confident that their new lights will shine brightly for generations to come.
Environmental Impact:
By reducing energy consumption, the Church of Christ the Cornerstone has not only lowered its operational costs but also made substantial strides in reducing its carbon footprint.
This commitment to sustainability aligns seamlessly with the church’s values and aspirations.
Conclusion and Recommendations:
The LED lighting upgrade project proved to be a resounding success with the entire congregation and the users of their facilities; the church’s interior was illuminated while significantly reducing energy consumption, and ongoing monitoring and maintenance has been recommended.
